GREECE NEEDS REAL WHISTLEBLOWER PROTECTION — NOT JUST LAWS ON PAPER by Ari Danikas

The protection of whistleblowers is essential for the fight against corruption, transparency, democratic accountability and human rights. Despite Law 4990/2022, which incorporated the European Directive 2019/1937, the crucial question remains: Who really protects whistleblowers when retaliation begins?

Greece needs more effective protection mechanisms, independent supervision, early intervention and substantial rehabilitation, drawing on the experiences of countries such as France, Italy and Spain.

-Retaliation can destroy lives. They do not only cause professional and financial damage. They can lead to chronic stress, depression, and PTSD, affecting entire families and children. Dr. Jacqueline “Jackie” Garrick, founder of@WhistleP2P in the USA, and Martina Buck highlighted these consequences in their book The Psychosocial Impacts of Whistleblower Retaliation (2022).

On June 11–12, 2024, we organized in Greece the international conference Global Corruption and Public Integrity: The Human Factor, with the participation of Dr. Garrick. https://libertyofspeech.org/the-human-factor-june-2024/

We moderated the special panel on traumatic stress, family resilience, and suicide prevention, where the impact of retaliation on whistleblowers and their families was discussed.

We also invited the Ministers of Health and Labor, due to the direct relevance of the issues to their responsibilities. Regratebly our invitations were ignored to and the ministers did not participate.

“The relevant ministries must recognise that effective whistleblower protection goes beyond legal safeguards. It must also guarantee timely, accessible and meaningful medical and psychological support for whistleblowers and their families experiencing distress as a result of retaliation.”

–The international proposals: • International Convention for the Protection of Whistleblowers. • International Bureau for Whistleblowers. • Emergency Protective Visa Mechanism for whistleblowers and their families. These proposals have been presented and published internationally, including in Washington DC, UK, South Africa, Australia and Athens: https://i-law.com/ilaw/doc/view.htm?id=448614

Furthermore,

@WB_UK has been collaborating with me to promote and advance this proposal, both in the UK and internationally, with the aim of establishing an International Office for Whistleblowers.

I invite local and international organisations working in human rights, transparency, accountability and whistleblower protection to join this initiative, contribute their expertise, and help further develop and refine this policy proposal into a practical international framework for the effective protection of whistleblowers.

-We cannot fight corruption, by leaving those who expose it unprotected.

-Whistleblower protection is not a privilege. It is an obligation of democracy and a matter of human rights.

-Greece needs a solid system that really protects those who dare to speak out agaisnt corruption.

I wonder if the Greek goverment is listening ?

BOOYSEN SAID IT WAS AN “ABUSE OF PROCESS”.

THE NKABINDE REPORT TELLS A DIFFERENT STORY. Johan Booysen was very confident when he dismissed the Nkabinde Inquiry. He called it an “abuse of process.” He dismissed Aris Danikas’s evidence as old material. He said the courts had already dealt with it. The message was clear: Nothing to see here. Move on. But the inquiry did not simply move on. It heard Danikas. It examined the evidence. It heard forensic evidence. And now the Nkabinde Report has said something Booysen’s version cannot simply explain away: the idea that there was “no evidence” was unsubstantiated. Let that sink in. This does not mean Booysen was found guilty. He wasn’t. It does mean that the easy dismissal of Danikas and the Cato Manor allegations has been seriously undermined. And that is where News24/City Press also have a problem. It gave Booysen a platform to call the inquiry an “abuse of process”. Now

Aris Danikas: An Odyssey for Truth, Justice and the Right to Speak

From South Africa to Greece and back to the public record: the extraordinary whistleblowing journey of internationally recognised human-rights advocate Aris Danikas Some journeys take years. Others become an odyssey. For Aris Danikas, Greek-born South African businessman, internationally recognised whistleblower and human-rights advocate, the journey began when he decided that serious allegations of wrongdoing within the South African police could not simply be ignored. What followed was almost two decades of danger, exile, evidence-gathering, institutional battles and repeated attempts to have his testimony properly heard. Today, that journey has brought him before the Nkabinde Inquiry in South Africa. The beginning of the odyssey As a police reservist in KwaZulu-Natal, Danikas became concerned about allegations involving the former Cato Manor Organised Crime Unit. He began documenting what he believed were serious abuses, including allegations of unlawful killings, torture and manipulation of crime scenes. He provided statements, photographs and video material to
