Giraffe award presented at Washington DC by the 2023 Workplace Promise Institute

The International Human Rights Advocacy Giraffe Award was presented to Ari Danikas from Liberty of Speech, (BluePrint For Greece) at the 2023 Workplace Promise Institute in Washington DC

The Giraffe Awards aim to recognize those who have stuck their neck out in an effort to fight corruption or mistreatment in the workplace. WPI Giraffe Award recipients are employees who have stuck their necks out to report malpractices, fraud, waste, abuse, mismanagement, etc. Those who bravely act to improve the integrity of the respective agency or beyond. Often in the face of seemingly insurmountable obstacles or challenges while facing criticism and anger. Categories for the nominee’s contributions are Government/Military, Private sector/Industry, Academia, COVID-19, and Supporter/Ally. There is no time frame that the nominees’ contributions must be within, so take a moment to recognize someone special because courage comes in all colors and spots!

Ari Danikas was born in Amaliada, Peloponnesus, Greece, the cradle of democracy, and he noted, “racial discrimination was non-existent in my family roots, religion and culture.” His parents were fine, upstanding Greeks, and Danikas described his mother as “living for her family, dedicated to serving and protecting the family,” and giving Danikas “the fundamental principles of humanity, kindness, and devotion.” Danikas sees her as ”healthy, adorable, and under [his] protection as she was left alone in life.” His mother, a housewife, was dedicated to her family and is very proud of Danikas. His father was a “hardworking man whose specialty was welding ships.” He trained shipyard workers on the island of Syros and gave Danikas “his skills of perfection, never giving up, always telling the truth, being fair to others, and always working hard until the job is done to high standards, and being polite and respectful of others.” Law

Ari Danikas (Greece/South Africa) 2016 SPECIAL RECOGNITION AWARD

Ari Danikas was a police reserve officer in the Cato Manor unit of the South African police. This unit typically deals with violent crime, including armed robbery, cash-in-transit robberies, the protection of politicians, kidnapping, drug trafficking, murder investigations, and organized criminal gangs. They are an elite unit of the South African Police. Through the publication of a series of videos and public revelations, Danikas revealed that the unit was allegedly engaged in extrajudicial killing, tampering with crime scenes, and the torture of subjects. In 2012, working with South Africa’s Sunday Times journalists Stephan Hofstatter and Mzilikazi wa Afrika (and with support from a third journalist, Rob Rose), Danikas had his disclosures published. This followed the initial posting of a series of videos forming part of the disclosure to YouTube in 2009.
